Faces gone after upgrades to Mavericks and iPhoto database.

An addendum to the above:

I decided to Repair the Database one more time - just for the heck of it. After doing so, all of the Faces that I had painstakingly added back in, after they first disappeared, were gone again! If you look at the info in Photos or Events, the correct Faces info is still imbedded in the photos - they just won't show in Faces. This is very disheartening. I have spent hundreds of hours in iPhoto over the past year, only to see much of that work disappear...and no way to control it.

A 2nd Addendum:

I also use Aperture and, since they use the same database, I opened it in that - to the same result. I 'repaired the database' in Aperture - same result. I went into Time Machine again and retrieved a 9.4 database and opened it in Aperture. It, too, needed to be converted before Aperture would open it - with the same result. So, the problem has to be in the part of the program that is converting the databases. Aperture has a really easy way to see and apply Faces to photos. In the ones that won't show up in Faces, I can't see or apply new Faces to them.

I so wanted to say that this worked Old Toad, but it didn't. After deleting the indicated files and restarting the system and the program, I had ZERO faces displaying. After Rebuilding Thumbnails, there still were zero Faces displaying. I opened it in Aperture and there some of the Faces were displaying (the same ones that were after the upgrade to 9.5). Went back to iPhoto and re-did permissions (no change), repaired the database again and got back to where I was before I deleted the plist and other files - but still missing the original half of the Faces. Rebuilt the Database again (no change). Rebuilt Thumbnails again (no change). When I'm in the Faces part of the program, all of the Key Photos are on display like they've always been. In addition, when you hover the mouse over the key photo, all of the 'missing' photos are there - they just won't display. When I try to change the Key Photo to one of the ones that won't display in Faces, it does change the Key Photo, but it still won't display the photo in Faces. The correct Faces info is still embedded in the photos that won't display.

When I deleted the iPhoto.plist file, there was also one called iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist. I deleted that one as well. Could that have adversely affected the outcome? In any case, I'm back to where I was before I tried this.

If you or anyone else has any other ideas, I eagerly await them. I appreciate your help.

I have another Mac that I just did a clean install of Mavericks on. So, I have a 'new' hard drive and a freshly downloaded copy of iPhoto 9.5 on it. I went back to Time Machine and got another copy of the 9.4 Database...and moved it to the other Mac. The Database upgraded and results are exactly the same as the other one - half the Faces are missing. So, it's gotta be an application issue that Apple will, hopefully, soon address. In scouring the web, however, I've only found 5-6 other people with a similar issue, so don't know if that will get them moving on it.

Yeah, I thought of that after my last reply and did just that, using a library from 3 months ago, when I know, without a doubt, that all the Faces were there. I tried it on the Mac with the Mavericks clean install. The result was the same. And when I go to those photos that are no longer displaying in Faces - and delete the Faces info and add it back in - the photos then show up in Faces. And then, if I 'repair the database' after that, they disappear again. So, I'm having a hard time figuring out how it could be something specific to my system or database, based on the results of everything I've tried. But, I also don't understand why more people haven't reported the same problem (unless Faces just isn't used as much as the other viewing options). The updated program was on my system for a week before I noticed the problem....and the only reason I did then was because I needed to find a certain photo and Faces was the fastest way to get to it.

Update: Apple released an update to Aperture today, which fixed the Faces problem in that program. Still not working in iPhoto, however. Waiting for that update.

Hi. My issue has been solved, though I don't understand how. After Apple issued an Aperture update back in November, it fixed the Faces problem in Aperture, though iPhoto still had the same Faces problem at least 24 hours later. However, a week or so after that, I happened to look in Faces for something and found that all of my missing Faces were back...and have been ever since! I had done nothing since the Aperture update, in turns of updates or repairs, so I don't know how it got fixed! iPhoto and Aperture share the same database, so it sort of makes sense that if you fix something in Aperture that it will fix the same problem in iPhoto. Except that it didn't - at least initially. And I didn't even use Aperture after I installed the update. So, I'm happy again....just wish I understood what happened.

An aside: When encountering these initial problems after the iPhoto upgrade, I wrote a review in the App store that mentioned these problems. Someone from Apple saw it and contacted me, asked if I'd be willing to work with an Apple engineer to help resolve the problems. Of course, I said YES.....but no one ever contacted me. I guess they figured the Aperture update would take care of the problem - which it did - eventually.
